Melanotan were developed at the University of Arizona. Researchers there knew that one of the best defenses against skin cancer was a natural tan which has been slowly developed over weeks. The original goal was to develop a hormone that could be injected in your body, develop a tan, and hence, the tanned skin would be naturally protected against the dangereous UV-rays.
Today, Melanotan is mainly used by tan-addicts who want to get a great bronzed-look. They inject the hormone using syringes, takes sunbed-sessions to kickstart the tanning process, and a few weeks later their bronzed look is achieved. The Food and Drug Administration in USA warns against using the hormone. Melanotan has not yet been properly tested. Many other countries have yet to research into the product.
Here's a news report from Australian television, they look into the Melanotan-craze and uses a guinea pig to help test it:

"afamelanotide" is not as sexy of a word as "melanotan" is. :-) Nice write up!

Hello, the video you have displayed here in your blog post is actually from New Zealand .
Have you read Wired's article just published about the melanotan peptides?

Melanotan was tagged as the "Barbie drug" because by using melanotanII,you can achieve Barbie's qualities like having a slim body and a tanned body. That's why it is widely used by tan-addicts to get there they desired for their skin color.

There's a lot of unlicensed and untested powders sold as "melanotan II" over the internet, and the government can't handle that simply because most of the consumers are not aware with this.

Excellent! It is an informative documentary video about the drug Melanotan. It helps a lot especially for those who do not know and wants to try melanotan. It will give them idea what is melanotan and the procedures how it is used and how melanotan became effective. If it is safe or not…

Melanotan is a really great tanning product. It doesn't only give you a suntan color but helps you to lose some weights. It is really recommended product opposite to what others are saying "dangerous" one.

Many people said that Melanotan is dangerous as it was not yet approve by the Health Department? Is this true? I guess not...I have known many Melanotan users who are satisfied and happy having a tan skin. I would like to know more about this drug.

I would argue most users are not tan-addicts...well, at least not the primary target market. Touche :)

The primary market does not and cannot go for the bronze look. A lot of tan-addicts do use however

Ms. Bikini Bonita,
There's big news with respect to melanotan-1, have you heard?
melanotan-1 (afamelanotide / Scenesse) has been approved in Italy for treating the photosensitivity of those afflicted with the orphan disease erythropoietic protoporphyria. This is a big first step towards and potential eventual release for more general usages. Cheers

Melanotan is used for an array of research. Photoprotection and appetite being the more prominent areas. Interesting stuff

It is a comfort thing!! The shorter needles need go in only a short way into the skin. Also the guage of the needle has a lot to do with the comfort zone. 31 g needles are almost like hair and go in so smoothly between nerve endings.I would like your articl.

There has been quite substantial testing with Melanotan I with meaningful data samples, although not as widely received for Melanotan II. It's important to monitor and review the use through a joint european and global governing body
